چکیده

Relativistic jets are a fundamental aspect of accretion onto black holes on all scales. They can carry away a large fraction of the available accretion power in collimated flows which later energise particles in the ambient medium. The removal of this accretion power and angular momentum must have a dramatic effect on the overall process of accretion. In their most spectacular form they are associated with supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN), and with Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), the most powerful and explosive engines in the Universe respectively. However, parallel processes, observable on humanly-accessible timescales, are occurring in the accretion onto black holes and neutron stars in binary systems within our own galaxy. We (Fender, Belloni & Gallo 2004; hereafter FBG04) have recently published a ’unified’ model for the ’disc-jet’ coupling in galactic black hole binaries. In the next few pages we shall quickly summarise this model.

We report the discovery of a radio-loud flat-spectrum QSO at z=5.47 with properties similar to those of the EGRET γ-ray blazars. This source is the brightest radio QSO at z>5, with a pc-scale radio jet and a black hole mass estimate & 10M⊙. It appears to be the most distant blazar discovered to date. High energy observations of this source can provide powerful probes of the background radiation...

A comparative XMM-Newton archival data spectral study of the ultraluminous Xray source (ULX) M33 X-8 has been performed by using both the standard disk model and the newly developed slim disk models. The results of this analysis tend to confirm the hypothesis that M33 X-8 is an X-ray binary with a stellar-mass black hole accreting at super-Eddington rate.

In recent years, an increasing number of proper motions have been measured for Galactic X-ray binaries. When supplemented with accurate determinations of the component masses, orbital period, and donor luminosity and effective temperature, these kinematical constraints harbor a wealth of information on the systems’ past evolution. The constraints on compact object progenitors and kicks derived ...

Core collapse of massive stars and binary neutron stars or black hole-neutron star binary mergers are likely progenitors of long and short duration gamma-ray bursts respectively. Neu-tronized material in the former and neutron star material in the latter are ejected by the central engine implying a neutron-rich jet outflow. A free neutron, however, beta decays to a proton, an electron (beta) an...

In this review I summarise the status of observational research into relativistic jets from X-ray binaries, highlighting four areas in particular: (i) How relativistic are the jets ?, (ii) The disc : jet coupling, (iii) the nature of the underlying flat spectral component, and (iv) the relation between jets from black holes and those from neutron stars. I have attempted to discuss the extent of...
